Antivirus Live: Not Helping to Protect

If you follow me on Twitter, you might have seen that in these past few days I have had some problems with Windows. But then again, who hasn’t? Now, I’m not trying to angle this post at the problems of Windows, or even OS X for that matter, but rather focusing on what happened

Odds are, if you’re running Windows, you have probably had a virus. Plain and simple, Windows is prone to viruses. A few years back, I made the awful mistake of letting a friend on my computer. Now, it wasn’t just that he was on my computer, but it was what he did rather. He was into all of the online games, and back then, I wasn’t as tech-savvy so I didn’t think much of it. I didn’t really pay much attention as to what sites he was on, but the next day, I found out the hard way. After logging onto Windows, I was immediately flooded with popups upon popups. I would say around 50 every ten minutes. Of course, it was then I knew I had a virus. At the time I was running Symantec’s Norton antivirus. Needles to explain why, the virus got past.

But that was a few years ago, and to this day I have had no other viruses on mycomputer. I should also mention that I am running ESET’s NOD32, might explain as to why I haven’t gotten them. But yesterday I was alarmed at my dad’s computer. He brought it up to me and he was in panic mode. On the desktop, there were about thirty websites that were popping up and what looked to be a antivirus that was alerting him that he had a virus. The problem? Well of course the websites/popups but also the antivirus message. He didn’t have an antivirus and it certainly wasn’t Windows Security. A few weeks ago his subscription to Norton ran out, and well, he just never really got around to the store for what I was recommending, NOD32. So, you could say, he had this coming. The fake antivirus program was called Antivirus Live, of course looking like a real antivirus solution.

So, seeing this virus on his computer, I immediately told him to head to the store and purchase NOD32. He did, and when he got back I wanted to install it right away. But I couldn’t. The virus was not allowing me to open anything .exe. Such as task manager etc. With this in mind, I downloaded MalwareBytes fromhttp://malwarebytes.org/ and then put it on a flash drive. After, I rebooted the computer into safe mode with networking and installed MalwareBytes directly from the flash drive. After that, I completed a full system scan which did indeed detect quite a few infected items. When it was finished I of course chose to remove them and then rebooted back into normal Windows mode. Bingo! The popups were gone and task manager was finally accessible! So, with this good to go, I popped in the NOD32 install disc and went to it. It installed with no problem and then proceeded to complete one full system scan, where it removed any leftovers.

Now the computer is good to go. With a fresh copy of NOD32 on it and rid of the virus it was set. The funny thing was that my friend mentioned he had this same virus and same fake antivirus running, so I happily went over there and removed it, doing the same method as above. I’m curious, have you had this virus? If not, know anyone who has?

Windows to Mac

I’ve finally done it. I’ve gone to what many call “the light side”…Mac. I’ve been a Windows guy all of my life. I’ve gone through Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista, and finally Windows 7. All decent operating systems, even Vista (SP2) but once I got to Windows 7 I had had enough. I had to reinstall twice just to get Aero to work, and to get rid of the error messages for just about every program. By no means here am I bashing Windows, I’ve always liked it a lot, just not in love with it.

So, I had decided that I’d had enough. I went and purchased a Mac Mini (2.53 Core2duo) and boy that was one of the best purchases of my life. First of all it was a step up from my last HP with Windows 7. I went from onboard graphics to a 9400m, four gigabytes of ddr2 ram to four gigabytes ddr3 ram, and also a faster clock speed. It shipped with 10.6 (Snow Leopard) installed and included iLife 09. I have to say I am really enjoying OS X. Not to say that Windows was bad, but OS X is just, well, better in my opinion.

If there are those of you out there out there that are considering switching, do it. You will not regret it, unless of course your an avid gamer. While OS X can support a lot of games, it’s no Windows when it comes to games.

So please, comment and share what you think. Are you on Windows and considering the switch? What about your views on OS X and or Windows.

So Far, So Good

It’s been two days since my reinstall, a clean install, of Windows 7. If you have read the last post I wrote, “Endless Problems with Windows 7” you can see that I had a great deal of issues. So with all of that in mind, I decided that it would be best for me to simply do a clean install of Windows 7, just to get out the bugs from the last install.

Now, two days after the second install, Windows 7 seems to be working great. No errors, no major issues, it’s finally starting to act how Windows 7 should act. Although I have gotten one issue, minor of course. I was on the IRC client, Xchat, and it somehow threw Windows into Basic. Don’t know what caused it, but I hear that this has been happening with the IRC client mIRC as well. No big issue, just closed out Xchat, and it was fine.

So, so far everything is running very well, I will keep everyone updated.

Microsoft gives me the blues.

bsod

Today, I was going to my PC to burn some audio files to CD. I start up Windows XP on my PC that I built myself. Now, mind you, this is the third PC I have built with no problems. And yes, it has the neon glow, blu-ray burner, etc.

The specs on this particular PC are as follows:

Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.66 GHz
3 GB of Ram
Two 160GB Hard Drives and a 40GB Backup drive
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
I go to start up Nero, and burn the first CD with no problems. I go to insert another CD, and I get a bloody welcome to a BSOD. So I reboot.

I do the same process again, and BSOD #2 appears. I reboot.

I makes it to the Windows XP welcome screen, and BSOD #3 appears. I reboot, this time with a Windows 7 disc in hand.

I install Windows 7, with no trouble, and finish my CD burning tasks.

I think Nero may have killed my Windows XP OS. And if that’s all it takes to kill an OS, thanks Microsoft. So here’s to Windows 7!

It’s a good thing I have several Macs. Those are my primary systems. And they never fail. NEVER.

But I am still a fan of Windows. I grew up on Windows, mostly. My father had a Macintosh Performa in the early 90’s, which I still have to this day.
